For families moving to a new area, adjusting can take time, no matter where they come from. But HCPS' Office of Equity, Diversity and Opportunity is teaming up with community partners to make this transition easier for Henrico's newest students and their families with a new, welcoming event this Saturday.
The HCPS Newcomer Outreach Event is Saturday, Oct. 19, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA (9211 Patterson Ave., Henrico, VA, 23229). This event is specifically designed to connect students and families who have recently moved to Henrico with the many excellent resources available them from HCPS or the broader community.
Newcomers can be many different types of people — military families, recent immigrants, refugees, multilingual families or just folks coming from a different city, county or state. The resources and support offered at this event will cater to any and all newcomers, and translators will be available in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Pashto and Dari.
Many representatives from HCPS will be on site to share information about the various programs and opportunities available at schools, promoting academic excellence, student health and wellness and all forms of support for new students.
Partnering organizations will provide information about:
Tutoring assistance
Current and future opportunities for students
Family financial support
Government resources
Health services and education
