From school security officers to bus drivers, other positions also available

Would you like to work in the classroom and make a difference? Do you love helping students? Consider joining Henrico County Public Schools as an instructional assistant or long-term substitute for the 2024-25 school year. We have vacancies across the school division and on all levels from pre-K to high school. Interested candidates are invited to a job fair Aug. 8 from 1-5 p.m. at the school division’s Parham Road Offices.

What do you need to be an HCPS instructional assistant?

  • Instructional assistants must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Forty-two semester hours from an accredited college or university is preferred. If you don’t have 42 semester hours, you are strongly encouraged to complete the ParaPro Assessment within 60 days of hire. Once HCPS receives your passing scores, the division will reimburse you for the test fee. Find out more about the assessment at www.ets.org/parapro.html.

  • A paraprofessional autism certification is required or must be completed within 60-days of hire. HCPS will help you attain one at no cost.

  • Full- and part-time positions are available. Full-time instructional assistants work 10 months (204 days) per year, a minimum of 7.25 hours per day. Starting compensation is $26,879 per year. Part-time (temporary) instructional assistants work 29 or fewer hours per week and earn $17.31 per hour.

Interested in being a long-term substitute teacher?

Long-term or “board” substitute teachers commit to filling one teaching position for at least 21 consecutive days, often to fill in for a teacher on extended leave. Long-term substitutes are paid $254.72 per day. They are eligible for health care benefits for themselves and their children. HCPS posts these positions individually by school. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree. Retired teachers must wait 90 days from their retirement date to rejoin the school division as a substitute teacher.
