From bus drivers to school nurses, variety of other positions also available

HENRICO, Va., July 2, 2024 — Would you like to work in the classroom and make a difference? Do you love working with students? Consider joining Henrico County Public Schools as an instructional assistant for the 2024-25 school year. Instructional assistants are the backbone of the classroom! We have vacancies across the school division and on all levels from pre-K to high school. The school division will hold a job fair July 9 from 2:30-6:30 p.m. at HCPS’ Parham Road Offices at 1910 E. Parham Road.

What do you need to be an HCPS instructional assistant?

  • Instructional assistants must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Forty-two semester hours from an accredited college or university is preferred. If you don’t have 42 semester hours, you are strongly encouraged to complete the ParaPro Assessment within 60 days of hire. Once HCPS receives your passing scores, the division will reimburse you for the test fee. Find out more about the assessment at www.ets.org/parapro.html.

  • A paraprofessional autism certification is required or must be completed within 60-days of hire. HCPS will help you attain one at no cost.

Full- and part-time positions are available. Full-time instructional assistants work 10 months (204 days) per year, a minimum of 7.25 hours per day. Starting compensation is $26,879 per year. Part-time (temporary) instructional assistants work 29 or fewer hours per week and earn $17.31 per hour.


In addition to instructional assistants, HCPS is seeking candidates for custodial and maintenance staff, bus drivers, school nutrition staff, school nurses and classroom teachers.

HCPS is offering newly hired bus drivers a bonus of up to $3,000, paid in installments throughout the year, when they join the transportation team as full-time drivers. On July 1, the starting hourly rate for full-time drivers increased to $25. HCPS also offers safe driver and attendance incentives to drivers already on staff. Extended full-time contracts are available for drivers who wish to work during summer school. Don’t worry if you don’t have bus driving experience — if you’re a qualified driver candidate, you’ll be paid as you train. Candidates for full-time and substitute bus drivers must: be at least 21 years old; have a valid Virginia driver’s license; be able to obtain a CDL Class B instructional permit or hold a CDL Class B license with endorsements in P/S (Passenger Transportation/School Bus) and airbrakes; and pass a physical and a drug test.
