Henrico County Public Schools announces new middle school Centers for Innovation

HENRICO, Va., Nov. 13, 2023 — Henrico County Public Schools is ushering in a new era of exciting and rigorous learning for middle school students with two new middle school Centers for Innovation. Developed in collaboration with VCU’s da Vinci Center for Innovation, these centers provide a dynamic learning opportunity for students to unleash their creativity, engage in hands-on projects and explore promising career paths in business and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

The inaugural Center for Innovation is set to open at John Rolfe Middle School in the upcoming 2024-25 school year, followed by the launch of Quioccasin Middle School’s Center for Innovation in 2026-27. Students from across the county can apply based on the proximity of their zoned middle school, with admissions determined through a lottery process. Information about the application process is available on the school division website, www.henricoschools.us.

The Centers for Innovation offer a unique daily experience that is distinct from traditional middle school schedules. English and social studies are combined into a single class block, as are math and science. Through project-based learning activities, students will make connections to real-world applications of their studies, preparing them for diverse STEM careers such as content creation, entrepreneurship, data analysis, information security, AI engineering and health care services.

The Centers for Innovation are not only transforming education in Henrico County but are also setting the stage for the future success of its students in an ever-evolving professional landscape. Introducing these centers marks a pivotal moment in Henrico County Public Schools’ commitment to ensuring all students have the skills and knowledge necessary to be life ready.

Students and families who want to learn more about the Centers for Innovation and how to apply should make plans to attend one of two upcoming information sessions.

More information about the centers is also available at www.henricoschools.us/o/hcps/page/middle-school-centers-for-innovation.
