Don’t let a missed physical or immunization be the reason a child can’t start school on time. Make sure you’ve provided your school with documentation confirming that your child has received all immunizations required by the Commonwealth of Virginia for school attendance. Immunization documentation may be submitted to the clinic at your child’s school. See a complete list of required vaccinations at the Virginia Department of Health website: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/immunization/requirements/.
- Does your child need an immunization? There are several ways to get the proper vaccinations. You can contact your primary health-care provider, get in touch with the Virginia Department of Health’s Richmond and Henrico Health Districts at 804-205-3501, or go to tinyurl.com/Immunization-Physicals to see a list of HCPS partners across the region offering school-required immunizations. Medicaid also covers school-required immunizations; check your Medicaid status at CoverVa.org.
- You can also attend one of six free, walk-in immunization clinics in August, sponsored by HCPS and the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts, for any HCPS student entering seventh or 12th grade. Depending on age and grade, students can get vaccinated for Tdap — tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis — and meningococcal virus. Clinics will be held:
- Aug. 21 from 9-11 a.m.: L. Douglas Wilder Middle School.
- Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. at George Moody Middle School.
- Aug. 22 from 12:30-3 p.m. at Henrico High School.
- Aug. 23 from 9-11 a.m. at Brookland Middle School.
- Aug. 29 from 9-11 a.m. at J.R. Tucker High School.
- Aug. 29 from 12:30-3 p.m. at Glen Allen High School.
- What vaccines will be available at the clinics and who is required to get them?
- Meningococcal vaccine: Only rising seventh- and 12th-graders can receive vaccinations. Required for students entering seventh and 12th grade.
- Tdap vaccine: Students ages 11 or older can be vaccinated. Required for students entering seventh grade.
Note: A completed vaccination consent form, signed by a parent or guardian, is required to receive vaccinations. Consent forms will be available at the clinic sites. Download the consent form in English or other languages.
Note: Students attending an immunization clinic at a school that isn’t the one they attend must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
