YAY BARRY DAVIS! Barry Davis, a bus driver with the Pupil Transportation Department, is today’s “Yay of the Day” honoree. Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored him recently with the award.

YAYWORTHY: Nominator Lauren Dunn said: “Barry goes far beyond his duties as simply a bus driver. He starts the kids’ days with a comforting welcome and ends with a cheerful goodbye. He knows each child’s name, greets parents along the route and gives everyone a sense of safe security as he travels. He is a gift to our kids and our families!

“Barry has made a difference to us many times, most notably on our son’s first day of kindergarten. As any parent does, I had many worries, but I had no idea our son might have some trouble with his end-of-day bus routine. There was some miscommunication and unbeknownst to me, instead of climbing aboard the bus home, he continued waiting with a group in the school auditorium. You can imagine my shock and fright when I went to the afternoon bus stop to collect him and he was nowhere to be found! Barry held my trembling mama-hands, stopped his route and hopped on his radio until we figured out the mixup. In that moment he let me know that nothing else mattered until we located my child safely. After we solved the mystery, he gave me his personal phone number and texted me each afternoon for several days in a row to tell me when he had our son on board, so that I didn’t have to worry. He reinforced that he would safely deliver him home.

“Barry went to such great lengths to help a new kindergarten mom feel calm, and I know I can trust him beyond a shadow of a doubt. On top of it all, he keeps the kids smiling each day. He has given them toys and trinkets for holidays and listens to their jokes and chatter with glee. Barry is an absolute superstar bus driver and also just a wonderful person.”

Thank you for all you do, Barry Davis, to make a positive difference and move HCPS forward!
