Summer Acceleration Course Options

Below are summer acceleration course options for current HCPS students interested in taking initial credit courses.

Henrico County Hybrid-Online Health and PE

Courses and prerequisites:

Health and P.E. 9 (Course 7300); Prerequisite: completion of, or currently completing 8th grade. 

Health and P.E. 10 (Course 7400); Prerequisite: completion of, or currently completing course 7300.  It does not include Driver Education.

Note: Courses are offered to students who will be enrolled in Henrico County Public Schools or HCPS students enrolled at Code RVA or Maggie Walker Governor’s School during the 2024-2025 and/or 2025-26 school year.  (MWGS students may not enroll in HPE9; check with your MWGS counselor)

Course Dates: June 3 - July 15, 2025

Cost:  $225 tuition

Henrico County Driver Education

HCPS DRIVER Education - Course 7040 (1/2 Credit) 
Tuition: $150.00 (This class is only open to HCPS Students)

Session 1

June 9 - June 26, 2025
Monday – Thursday (No classes on Friday), No class on June 19, 2025

Session 2

June 30 - July 17, 2025=
Monday -Thursday (No classes on Fridays, No class on July 3; make-up day July 11, 2025  - Virtual Instruction)

A valid Virginia learner’s permit is required on the first day of class.  The course schedule includes classroom instruction, simulation, and range driving.  Students are required to attend the last day of class.  Upon course completion, teachers will coordinate the Behind-The-Wheel component (3-7 sessions).  HCPS currently offers the BTW component at $125; however, this portion may be completed through private vendors.

Online Economics & Personal Finance (EPF) through Longwood University

Who: Rising 9-12th grade students (Rising freshmen and sophomore students are required to have at least a 3.0 GPA and must have successfully completed Algebra I.  Rising seniors and juniors do not have a minimum GPA requirement.)

Summer Session June 23 - July 26, 2025

* Students have the option to take their W!SE exam on Longwood University’s campus.  

Registration will open in mid-March and close on June 6, 2025.  Tuition: $50

Economics and Personal Finance is a 4-week rigorous, mathematically intensive course covering economics and personal finance that may require students to spend up to 6 hours daily to succeed. The course satisfies the state’s economics and personal finance requirements as well as the online experience and certification requirements for high school graduation. The W!SE Financial Literacy Certification exam is administered in the course. Students will receive 3 hours of college credit for successfully completing this class. 

Required course text: Personal Finance, Turning Money Into Wealth, 7th edition (an earlier edition can be purchased for cost savings)  

Required course calculator: Any graphing or financial calculator (Texas Instruments BAII+ is recommended).

Online acceleration courses through Virtual Virginia

HCPS students have the option of enrolling in either Virtual Virginia Summer Cohorts.  Students can take two courses (max) during the summer.  These courses can be taken one course per cohort/term.

Summer Cohort 1

  •  Registration Window: February 26 - June 4, 2025

  •  Instruction: June 3 - July 11, 2025

Summer Cohort 2

  • Registration Window: February 26 - June 18, 2025

  • Instruction: June 17 - July 25, 2025

Enrollment Fee: $375 per person, per course.

Enrollment fees must be paid at the time of course registration and must be made using a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover card.  If a student’s summer session enrollment fee is not paid by noon on the individual cohort start date, the student will be administratively withdrawn from the course(s) by Virtual Virginia.  

Current HCPS students interested in enrolling in acceleration courses through Virtual Virginia should contact your school’s Registrar to assist with the registration process.

Withdrawal Information

Withdrawal from a Virtual Virginia Summer Session course must be submitted by the enrolling school that registered the student to Virtual Virginia.  HCPS parents must submit the request to withdraw their student, in writing, to their student’s HCPS School Counseling Office. 

Term - Withdrawal deadline (by 10 a.m.)

Summer Cohort 1 : Tuesday, June 3, 2025*

* Please note: Virtual Virginia’s deadline is Friday, June 6, 2025, but HCPS must submit the request and complete the withdrawal process to Virtual Virginia on behalf of the student. Also, the HCPS Summer schedule is Monday-Thursday, and offices are closed on Fridays.

Summer Cohort 2: Tuesday, June 17, 2025*

* Please note: Virtual Virginia’s deadline is Friday, June 20, 2025, but HCPS must submit the request and complete the withdrawal process to Virtual Virginia on behalf of the student. Also, the HCPS Summer schedule is Monday-Thursday, and offices are closed on Fridays.

No refunds will be issued for enrollments withdrawn after the corresponding dates above.  Students who withdraw after those dates will have the withdrawal grade (WP – Withdraw Passing or WF – Withdraw Failing) reflected on their HCPS transcript.

Who: Self-motivated and task-driven students in rising 7-8th grade who are driven to spend 4-6 hours per day working online may register to take one of the following courses for acceleration:

Self-motivated and task-driven students in rising 9-12th grade who have met prerequisites and are driven to spend 4-6 hours per day working online may register to take one of the following courses for acceleration:
