School Bus Seat Belt Policy

The HCPS Department of Pupil Transportation strives to provide the safest student transportation possible. The school division has purchased and installed three-point shoulder-and-lap seat belts on school buses.

HCPS requires that all elementary students riding a school bus equipped with seat belts wear them while the bus is moving.

Before the bus leaves, drivers will announce that each student needs to be seated, with seat belt fastened. Students who need help using seat belts should ask the bus driver for assistance, so that all students are safely secured in their seat before the bus is in motion.

Students refusing to use seat belts create a safety concern for themselves and others and are subject to school division disciplinary action. Repeated refusal to wear seat belts may result in suspension from bus-riding privileges.

Consequences for students

  • Referral No. 1: Verbal warning and parent or guardian notified.

  • Referral No. 2: Three days off the bus and parent or guardian notified by principal.

  • Referral No. 3: One week off the bus and parent or guardian notified by principal.

  • Referral No. 4: Removed from the bus for the remainder of the school year and parent or guardian notified by principal.
