An initial placement test uses research-based criteria to place students in a level within the program. Work within the program uses computer adaptive to provide additional support as needed.

This resource supports six areas of literacy. Students work in Lexia for 15-20 minutes a day, three times a week.

Smarty Ants

This resource uses research-based criteria to place students in a level within the program. The assessment is completed three times a year. During the year, students complete activities that strengthen phonics understanding. Students work in Smarty Ants for 15-20 minutes a day, three times a week.

Guided Reading Level

This assessment documents reading behaviors and identifies an instructional reading level for each student. The instructional reading level can be determined through a formal assessment (two to three times a year) and/or frequent informal teacher assessments, such as running records.

PALS

The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening assessment is a screening tool of young children’s literacy development. Results are used to determine individual children’s learning goals, plan classroom instruction, and raise awareness of children who need additional support or instruction in early reading and literacy. PALS is administered in the spring to all students without a high benchmark score from the previous spring and to select students in the fall. There is also an optional midyear assessment.

HCPS Math Screener

The HCPS Math Screener determines if children can recognize the parts of a number to 10 and see the relationship between composition and decomposition of numbers. The HCPS Math Screener is administered in the fall and spring as well as periodically throughout the year to adjust a student’s working number.

Dreambox

This resource adapts to the individual learner through continuous formative assessment in and between lessons. Students should complete at least five lessons each week.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

All Henrico students participate in a universal screener during their 2nd grade year. The CogAT test assesses verbal, quantitative reasoning, and nonverbal skills. It is an untimed test that is administered verbally to students. Parent and guardians will receive the student profile report in May.
