📝A Message for 10th Grade Families:

Henrico County Public Schools continues to work on End-of-Course Writing Performance Portfolios during the 2023-24 school year.  During the fourth quarter, students will complete three writing tasks.  To prepare for the writing, students will be working through a booklet to analyze two texts in class.  Students will receive teacher guidance and support to work through analyzing the readings.  Students will use their reading booklets to complete the essay tasks.  Please note to graduate with a standard or advanced diploma, students need this verified credit in writing.  Essays will be scored by teacher teams over the summer and reported to families in the fall.  Please continue to speak with your child on the importance of doing their best in class and on this portfolio.  Please check in with your child’s teacher on your child’s progress.

Attendance matters for Senior Exam Exemption

FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION INFORMATION

There will be a final exam in every course at the end of the school year. Those students who are seniors and those students who are in the 9th - 11th grade who are enrolled in an AP/IB Course AND sit for the corresponding AP/IB Exam may be exempt from their final exam if the following conditions are met:

1.   Cumulative course average of at least 80 when grades and other specified criteria are compiled to determine exam exemption near the close of the fourth nine weeks.

2.   Maintain a minimum fourth nine-week average of 80 in the course to be exempted.

3.   The student cannot have been absent from the class more than ten times during the school year (semester class - not more than five times). Religious holidays and school-related absences (field trips, SODA, athletics, documented college visits, etc.) do not count within those absences.

4.   Three unexcused tardies to class equal one absence related to the exam exemption criteria. Six unexcused tardies to school immediately removes the student from eligibility. Six unexcused tardies to an individual class eliminates the student from exam exemption eligibility in that class.

5.   The student must attend at least 75% of a class to be counted as present in that class related to exam exemption eligibility.

6.   Any integrity violation which results in disciplinary action removes the student from eligibility.

How will the AP/IB exam and final exam exemption work?

·     No changes have been made to the policy.

·     Senior takes AP/IB class, takes exam, meets senior exam exemption requirements- exempt from final.

·     Senior takes AP/IB class, doesn’t take AP/IB exam, meets senior exam exemption requirements- exempt from final

·     Senior takes AP/IB class, takes AP/IB exam, fails to meet senior exam exemption requirements- must take final

·     Underclassman takes AP/IB class, takes AP/IB exam, meets senior exam exemption requirements- exempt from final

·     Underclassman takes AP/IB class, doesn’t take AP/IB exam, meets senior exam exemption requirements- must take final (not eligible for senior exemption)

·     Underclassman takes AP/IB class, takes AP/IB  exam,  fails to meet senior exam exemption requirements – must take final

****IB is defined as an IBDP course with an associated IB exam.
