Title I of the U.S. Elementary and Secondary Education Act includes federal financial assistance "to provide all children significant opportunities to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps."
Support-staff members are assigned to schools designated as qualifying for federal Title-I funds — including at least one Title-I reading instructional coach. Additional staff members, including Title-I math instructional coaches, may also provide support, depending on the needs of the school. As part of a divisionwide initiative, Title-I math and reading instructional coaches focus on coaching to improve instruction in all school classrooms. In an effort to close the achievement gap, Title-I funds provide additional support, such as small-group remediation and supplemental programming. HCPS family advocates are also staff members at Title-I schools. They provide programming and support to families to ensure they can participate and engage in school programming. All staff members can be reached by contacting the schools directly.
Title I provides funding for:
Instructional reading and math coaches.
Family engagement opportunities and materials.
Professional development for instructional staff members.
Take-home libraries.
Instructional materials.
Summer programs.
Tutoring.
