Equity, Diversity and Opportunity

Henrico County Public Schools is committed to creating and supporting welcoming learning environments that embrace and celebrate the diversity of our student body and workforce. The Office of Equity, Diversity and Opportunity has a pivotal role in helping create and strengthen conditions that enable all students to have opportunities for a rigorous education. The department's key areas of focus include:

Professional learning and cultural competency: Cultivating cultural competency among educators and leaders, and recognizing the critical role that professional learning plays in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Mitigation of barriers: Championing the identification and mitigation of barriers to diversity and actively addressing challenges to ensure an equitable educational experience for all.

Student voice for equity: Empowering students to contribute to and shape the dialogue about equity, and fostering a culture where student perspectives play a major role in how decisions are made.

Uplifting opportunities: Working strategically to create opportunities that uplift and empower all students, irrespective of background or identity.

Building HCPS' ability to fulfill its mission: Helping create and strengthen conditions that provide opportunities for all students. This includes developing an engaged and culturally responsive staff that reflects the diversity of the student body.

Students in the classroom

Equity

HCPS is committed to providing all students what they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.  This includes students from historically marginalized and fiscally under-resourced communities; students in special education programs, English-language learners and other students with diverse educational needs.

Diversity/Inclusivity

HCPS is committed to recognizing that students need cultural knowledge about themselves and others.  Students need to see themselves reflected in their teaching environment, as well as appreciate someone else’s worldview.

Opportunity

HCPS is committed to creating learning opportunities for students to see the world from multiple perspectives, which strengthens society by ensuring cohesive fundamental values.
