YAY ARONNE BROOKS! Aronne Brooks, a permanent substitute teacher at Maybeury Elementary School, is today’s “Yay of the Day” honoree. Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored her recently at the school.

YAYWORTHY: Student Mara Brennan wrote a nomination on behalf of her class: “Ms. Brooks really teaches us when she is a substitute. She translates to talk to us in our language and uses it when she is helping us with our work. She makes it feel like we don’t have a substitute because she teaches us how to do the work and does small group work, too. She comes in and works with us when she isn’t a sub in a new room and goes to all the rooms to help when she isn’t a substitute.

“She is really funny and makes school fun. She dresses up for fun days even though she doesn’t have her own class. She taught us an easy way to do division and it made it make sense! She hugs me. She listens to me. She helps me calm down when I am having big feelings. She gets me.

“One time, Ms. Brooks was a substitute in a fifth grade class and a student who had joined our school was withdrawn and struggling emotionally to adjust. Work wasn’t getting completed. She took the time to get to know the student and they formed a bond. After that, he sat taller and worked hard. He felt valued as a member of our school family because he had a person who knew him. Sometimes it takes one person to make someone feel important and it changes everything. Aronne Brooks is that person for so many students. We are so thankful for her!”

Thank you for all you do, Aronne Brooks, to make a positive difference and move HCPS forward!
