HCPS Summer Academy is a unique program that gives elementary, middle and high school students important opportunities for enrichment, credit-recovery and remediation. The 2023 edition will be held at 26 HCPS sites: 11 elementary schools, seven middle schools and eight high schools, along with online summer instruction for Henrico Virtual Academy students.

Plans for Summer Academy 2023 are underway! Summer Academy 2023 offers a unique opportunity for HCPS students currently enrolled in pre-K through fifth grade. At no cost to HCPS families, learners have the opportunity to receive teacher-led in-person learning in literacy and mathematics, along with social and emotional learning. Virtual learning will be offered to students currently enrolled in Henrico Virtual Academy. Reading and math activities will include whole-class instruction in addition to small-group instruction to meet students’ individual needs. Breakfast and lunch will be served, and transportation will be provided from each elementary school.
Elementary Summer Academy learning is June 26 to July 20, Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Families may attend the entire four weeks, or may attend a two-week session from July 10-20.
Registration for 2023 Elementary Summer Academy begins Tuesday, April 11 and ends May 12. Elementary schools will send registration forms through SchoolMessenger. They will also be available on schools’ websites and printed copies will be in each school’s office.

Study Skills Program for rising sixth graders
The Study Skills Program is designed to prepare rising sixth graders for the rigors of middle school. Students will use SOL resources to develop and enhance study skills, test-taking strategies, leisure reading and classroom performance. This course is only for rising sixth graders. Information will be provided to students and parents from their current elementary school counselors. The registration window opens April 11 and closes May 12.

Math support programs for rising sixth graders
Math Essentials Course 1 is a remediation course. The course will provide an opportunity to strengthen the math skills for success in the next math level. A focus will be placed on basic skills, number sense, computation and estimation. Selected students will be notified of eligibility to participate in the Middle School Math Support program. A separate registration form will be sent with the notice of eligibility.

Summer Bridge to Algebra Program
Middle School Math SupportThis free accelerated program is designed to provide Course 2 students the opportunity to enroll in Algebra I in eighth grade. The Bridge to Algebra curriculum contains the essential Math 8 Pre-Algebra content and standards that would be skipped when enrolling in Algebra I. It is important to note the Summer Bridge is required for your student to be enrolled in Algebra I in eighth grade.
Option 1: The Bridge to Algebra Online class gives students convenience and flexibility. With this option, students have the opportunity to plan study time around their summer schedule. Students will watch instructional videos, practice and take assessments using Edgenuity’s online platform. It requires that students be motivated to complete the work independently with virtual help available.
- Students may begin the Bridge to Algebra Online program virtually on May 30. Students will be able to use school-issued computers.
- Students will complete all coursework and a final assessment administered virtually. Work must be completed by July 27.
- Students must pass the Edgenuity program with an overall performance of at least 65%. Students who did not achieve 65% will have additional opportunities to retake assessments before July 27.
Option 2: The Bridge to Algebra Summer Essentials sessions are a personal traditional school experience. With this option, students meet during the summer for two weeks and receive immediate support from a teacher in conjunction with the Edgenuity program. The classes will be held at one of the summer school locations during the date/time below.

Upon successful completion of the Bridge to Algebra, your student will be automatically enrolled in Algebra I. Students who do not pass Bridge to Algebra will be enrolled in Pre-Algebra.

A free, appropriate public education for some students with disabilities may require a program of special education and related services in excess of the normal school year. In order for students with disabilities to access extended school-year services programming, an IEP team must convene to discuss individual student needs and determine extended-school-year eligibility.

ESL Summer Enrichment instruction will be offered to select rising first through 12th grade Level 1 newcomer students. Extended-day ESL Summer Enrichment instruction will take place for five weeks with a focus on developing English language skills and academic vocabulary in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will also be provided with opportunities to engage with language through music, art, STEM, physical activity and/or social and emotional learning. Registration forms will be sent home to those who qualify through their ESL teacher. English learning students who do not qualify for ESL Summer Enrichment may attend the summer academy for their home school.

Online Economics & Personal Finance (EPF) through Longwood University
Who: Rising ninth through 12th grade students (rising freshmen and sophomore students are required to have at least a 3.0 GPA and must have successfully completed Algebra I. Rising seniors and juniors do not have a minimum GPA requirement.)

The course satisfies Virginia’s economics and personal finance requirement and the online experience and certification requirements for high school graduation. The W!SE Financial Literacy Certification exam is administered in the course. Students will receive three hours of college credit for successfully completing this class.
Required course text: “Personal Finance: Turning Money Into Wealth, 7th edition” (an earlier edition may be purchased for cost savings)

Online Acceleration courses through Virtual Virginia:
HCPS students have the option of enrolling in either Virtual Virginia summer cohorts. Students may take a maximum of two courses during the summer. These courses can be taken one course per cohort/term.

If a student’s summer session enrollment fee is not paid by noon on the individual cohort start date, the student will be administratively withdrawn from the course(s) by Virtual Virginia.
Current HCPS students interested in enrolling in acceleration courses through Virtual Virginia should contact your school’s registrar to assist with the registration process.
Withdrawal information
Withdrawal from a Virtual Virginia summer session course must be submitted by the enrolling school that registered the student with Virtual Virginia. HCPS parents must submit the request (in writing) to withdraw their student to their student’s HCPS school counseling office.

Automotive Technology introduces students to the different areas involved in auto repair and maintenance. Students will develop an understanding of how a car works and the different facets of car ownership and care.
Cosmetology introduces students to the foundation of hair, nail, and skincare.
Criminal Justice explores the world of modern law enforcement. Learn to use police equipment to solve crimes and keep order. Topics include crime scene investigation, using police tactical gear, fingerprinting and common patrol tactics.
Culinary Arts students participate in creative activities related to following recipes and cooking. Learn basic culinary techniques, menu planning and explore culinary careers.
Early Childhood Education and Services is ideal for students interested in pursuing the field of education, especially those who have a passion for working with younger children. Students will work directly with preschool-aged children enrolled at Springer Preschool Academy.
Electricity and Cabling is designed to introduce students to electricity-related occupations. Basic principles of electricity are stressed with emphasis on residential wiring.
Game Design and Web Development is designed to engage students in understanding the foundation of creating dynamic, visually appealing websites. Students will explore the fundamentals of front-end web development and create their web page by considering the layout, responsive pages, dynamic content and more.
Greenhouse students will learn the principles of growing seeds to have flowers and food. Propagation techniques will also be learned. Gardening will become a skill you develop that will serve you well.
Hospitality, Tourism and Catering students will participate in hands-on cooking demonstrations, learn basic culinary techniques, plan events and explore the hospitality industry, including food and beverage (catering), lodging, recreation, travel and tourism.
Legal/Medical Systems Administration is an introductory course for students who want to be legal or medical office workers or specialize in other fields in a legal or medical environment. Students develop skills that prepare them for employment in various legal and medical office environments.
Radio Broadcasting and Journalism focus on learning about the Production Studio. Learn about the history of audio editing on various platforms, emphasizing Adobe Audition. Students will experience the process of digital audio production via hands-on projects, including sports announcing.

Auto Body Repair introduces students to aspects of automotive body repair including minor body repair and proper use of the tools of the trade.
Automotive Technology introduces students to the many fields related to the automotive service industry, including engine and brake repair.
Baking and Pastry teaches students safety and sanitary practices in a commercial kitchen. Students will focus on breadmaking, cupcake baking/decorating, and making various types of cookies.
Barbering teaches students the basics of hair, scalp, and skincare. Students practice on mannequins to hone their new skills and discover what it takes to operate a barbershop.
Computer-Aided Drafting and 3D Animation is an introductory course where students gain an understanding of how to create drawings, 3D models, and animations using the latest CAD software.
Creation Station explores the various classes offered at the ACE Center through a creative writing lens. Students will confront real-world issues in the selected career paths to build problem-solving strategies and create authentic solutions.

EMT Intro will allow students to complete their CPR/first aid certification. Other topics include FEMA certificates for emergency situations, learning medical terminology and “Stop the Bleed” training.
Graphic Communications is designed to introduce students to the world of printing. Learn techniques to manage and control production printing using 21st-Century skills and develop digital composition and printing skills, wide-format printing and collation/binding operations.
High Tech Academy introduces students to a multi-discipline program offering math, science,and engineering. Students work in teams to solve problems incorporating advanced mathematics and science.
Masonry students learn to use, care for, and handle safely the tools, machines, equipment and materials commonly used in the masonry trade.
STEM and Precision Machining introduces students to the world of STEM through activities using machining technology. Students learn to lay out and produce projects using industry-standard tools and equipment.
Pharmacy Technician introduces students to the skills needed to assist pharmacists in delivering health care services to clients in various settings.
Sports Medicine students will spend three weeks learning skills to swim for life. They will be tested on various swimming skills beginning with blowing bubbles with the goal of learning multiple swimming techniques.
Advanced students will be able to learn lifeguard skills and become certified upon completion of the course. They must meet all the testing and skill requirements to receive their certification.
Welding introduces students to basic welding techniques. Create items using the skills learned and explore options for careers in welding.
Veterinary Science is an introductory course designed to teach basic skills in animal care and explore animal-related careers. Content includes animal behavior, breeds and species, basic animal anatomy, restraint and handling, feeding/nutrition, animal grooming, facility maintenance and cleaning, and workplace-readiness.

General Information:
Tuition is free for Summer Polytech. Only Henrico County residents may enroll in Summer Polytech. Students do not gain industry-standard certifications as part of the Summer Polytech program unless noted otherwise.
Summer Polytech has an attendance requirement. Once a student misses three days of a credited class, they will be removed from the class. No credit is earned, and tuition is forfeited.
Transportation by HCPS will begin on the first day: June 12, 2023. Bus schedules will be sent via email before the first day of class. Ensure that your email address is clearly and correctly written on the registration form. Students will be picked up from and returned to the elementary school you list on the registration form.
Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications will not be processed before April 10. Rising ninth through 12th grade students will be able to receive 0.5 credits from the three-week course. Rising sixth through eighth grade students will not receive credit.
The withdrawal deadline is June 8, 2023, at 3 p.m.

Henrico County Workforce and Career Development offers the CTE Summer Building Trades program for rising 10th and 11th graders.
The Summer Building Trades program provides an opportunity for students to gain real-world experience in a variety of different building trades. Upon successful completion of the course, students will earn one high school credit and have the opportunity to gain their OSHA-10 certification. Students will be able to explore multiple building trades, including carpentry, electricity, heating/air, masonry and cabling/networking. In addition, students will be able to work in various settings around Henrico County, including commercial and residential projects.

HVA/Virtual Virginia: Online students will take required SOL tests on Monday, July 24 at 10 a.m. at their zoned summer academy site.
Project Graduation: For Students not enrolled in a Summer School course
High school students who have passed a class but have not passed the associated EOC SOL test(s) needed for graduation will have the opportunity to take one or more tests at Glen Allen or Highland Springs high schools after participating in a review session. Students must attend 9 a.m. to noon each day of the review. Registration links will be available from your school testing coordinator and accepted until June 12.
