HCPS Summer Academy is a unique program that gives elementary, middle and high school students important opportunities for enrichment, credit-recovery and remediation. The 2022 edition will be held at 26 HCPS sites: 11 elementary schools, seven middle schools and eight high schools, along with online summer instruction for Henrico Virtual Academy students.

2022 Elementary Summer Academy offers a unique opportunity for currently enrolled pre-K to grade 5 students. At no cost to HCPS families, learners can participate in teacher-led in-person learning in literacy and mathematics, along with social and emotional learning. Virtual learning will be offered to students currently enrolled in Henrico Virtual Academy. Reading and math activities will include whole-class instruction in addition to small group instruction to meet students’ individual needs. Breakfast and lunch will be served, and transportation will be provided from each elementary school.
Dates for Elementary Summer Academy are July 11 to Aug. 4, and hours will be Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students may attend the entire four weeks, or choose a two-week session (July 11-21 or July 25-Aug. 4).
Registration for Elementary Summer Academy begins April 11 and ends May 6. Elementary schools will send registration forms through SchoolMessenger, they will be available on schools’ websites, and printed copies will be in each school’s office.

Study Skills Program for rising sixth graders
The Study Skills Program is designed to prepare rising sixth graders for the rigors of middle school. Students will use Virginia SOL resources to develop and enhance study skills, test taking strategies, leisure reading and classroom performance. This course is only for rising sixth graders. Information will be provided to students and families by their current elementary school counselor. The registration window opens April 11.

Math support programs for rising sixth graders
Math Essentials Course 1 is a remediation course. The course will provide an opportunity to strengthen math skills for success at the next level of math. The focus is on basic skills, number sense, computation and estimation. Selected students will be notified of eligibility to participate in the Middle School Math Support programs. A separate registration form will be sent with the notice of eligibility.

A free, appropriate public education for some students with disabilities may require a program of special education and related services in excess of the normal school year. The English as a Second Language Summer Enrichment Program will be offered to select Level-1 students who will be in first through 12th grades in 2022-23. Extended-day ESL summer enrichment instruction will take place for five weeks with a focus on developing English language skills and academic vocabulary in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will also be provided opportunities to engage with language through music, art, STEM, physical activity or social and emotional learning. Registration forms will be sent home by ESL teachers to those who qualify. English learning students who do not qualify for ESL summer enrichment may attend the summer academy for their home school.

Creative Writing/Public Speaking
Students will have the opportunity to explore techniques used in writing short stories, plays and poetry. The course will also focus on public speaking skills and exploration of dramatic skills such as improvisation, gestures and voice projection. Students will have the opportunity to write scenes, dialogue and speeches. (Please note: This class is not for credit and will not be added to the student’s academic transcript.)

Online Economics & Personal Finance through Longwood University
Who: Rising ninth through 12th grade students (Freshmen and sophomore students are required to have at least a 3.0 GPA. Seniors and juniors, including rising juniors, do not have a minimum GPA requirement.)

Economics and Personal Finance is a four-week, rigorous, mathematically intensive course covering economics and personal finance that may require students to spend up to six hours per day to be successful. The course satisfies Virginia’s economics and personal finance requirement as well as the online experience and certification requirements for high school graduation. The W!SE Financial Literacy certification exam is administered in the course. Students will receive three hours of college credit for this class.
Required course text: “Personal Finance, Turning Money into Wealth, 7th edition” (An earlier edition can be purchased to save money.)

Henrico County Workforce and Career Development
Presents CTE Summer Polytech for rising sixth-12th graders
Tuition is $50 per course. Only Henrico County residents may enroll in Summer Polytech. Students do not gain industry standard certifications as part of the Summer Polytech program, unless noted otherwise.
Summer Polytech has an attendance requirement. Once a student misses three days of a credited class, he or she will be removed from the class. No credit is earned, and tuition is forfeited.
Transportation by HCPS will begin on the first day, June 21. Bus schedules will be sent via email before the first day of class. Be sure that your email address is clearly written on the registration form. Students will be picked up from and returned to the elementary school you list on the registration form.
Classes are filled on a first come, first-served basis. If you pay online, registration with payment or receipt needs to be received before a student will be registered in a course.
Applications will not be processed before April 11. Rising ninth-12th grade students will be able to receive 0.5 credits from the four-week course. Rising sixth-eighth grade students will not receive credit.
The withdrawal deadline is June 17 by 3 p.m.
This course will be available onsite with in-person instruction along with a virtual instruction option.

2022 CTE Summer Polytech course offerings for rising sixth-8th graders
Automotive Technology introduces students to the different areas involved in auto repair and maintenance. Students will develop an understanding of how a car works and the different facets of car ownership and care.
Computer Systems Technology is an introductory program for students who enjoy building, repairing, or troubleshooting P.C. computers, basic electronics and networking. Students will also be introduced to various computer applications.
Cosmetology introduces students to the foundation of hair, nail and skin care.
Criminal Justice explores the world of modern law enforcement. Learn to use police equipment to solve crimes and keep order. Topics include crime scene investigation, using police tactical gear, fingerprinting and common patrol tactics.
Early Childhood Education and Services is ideal for students interested in pursuing the field of education, especially those who have a passion for working with younger children. Students will work directly with preschool-aged children enrolled at Springer Preschool Academy.
Electricity & Cabling is designed to introduce students to electricity-related occupations. Basic principles of electricity are stressed with an emphasis on residential wiring.
Hospitality, Tourism, and Catering Students will participate in hands-on cooking demonstrations, learn basic culinary techniques, plan events and explore the hospitality industry including food and beverage (catering), lodging, recreation, travel and tourism.
Radio Broadcasting and Journalism focuses on learning about the production studio. Learn about the history of audio editing using various platforms, with an emphasis on Adobe Audition. Students will experience the process of digital audio production via hands-on projects, including sports announcing.
Veterinary Science is an introductory course designed to teach basic skills in animal care and explore animal-related careers. Content includes animal behavior, breeds and species, basic animal anatomy, restraint and handling, feeding/nutrition, animal grooming, facility maintenance and cleaning, and workplace readiness.

Automotive Technology introduces students to the many fields related to the automotive service industry, including engine and brake repair.
Barbering teaches students the basics of hair, scalp, and skincare. Students practice on mannequins to hone their new skills and discover what it takes to operate a barbershop.
Computer-Aided Drafting and 3D Animation is an introductory course where students gain an understanding of how to create drawings, 3-D models, and animations using the latest CAD software.
Computer Systems Technology is an introductory program for students who enjoy building, repairing, or troubleshooting PC computers, basic electronics, and networking. Students will also be introduced to various computer applications.
Creation Station explores the various classes offered at the ACE Center through a creative writing lens. Students will confront real-world issues in the selected career paths to build problem-solving strategies and create authentic solutions.
Cosmetology teaches students the foundation of the professional care of the hair, skin and nails. Students will practice techniques needed to perform these services in a salon setting environment.
Criminal Justice explores the world of modern law enforcement. Learn to use police equipment to solve crimes and keep order. Topics include crime scene investigation, using police tactical gear, fingerprinting, and common patrol tactics.
Culinary Arts students participate in creative activities related to following recipes and cooking. Learn basic culinary techniques, menu planning, and explore culinary careers.
Diesel Technologies introduces students to the fundamentals of diesel equipment technology. Learn the basics of diesel vehicles such as fire trucks, school buses and ambulances.
Early Childhood Education and Services is ideal for students interested in pursuing the field of education, especially those who have a passion for working with younger children. Students will work directly with preschool aged children enrolled at Springer Preschool Academy.
Electricity & Cabling is designed to introduce students to electricity-related occupations. Basic principles of electricity are stressed with emphasis on residential wiring.
Graphic Communications is designed to introduce students to the world of printing. Learn techniques to manage and control production printing using 21st-Century skills and develop digital composition and printing skills, wide format printing, and collation/binding operations.
Greenhouse students will learn the principles of growing seeds to have flowers and food, as well as propagation techniques. Gardening is a skill that will serve you well.
High Tech Academy introduces students to a multidiscipline program offering math, science and engineering. Students work in teams to solve problems incorporating advanced mathematics and science.
Legal/Medical Systems Administration is an introductory course for students who want to be legal or medical office workers or specialize in other fields in a legal or medical environment. Students develop skills that prepare them for employment in a variety of legal and medical office environments.
Masonry students learn to use, care for, and handle safely the tools, machines, equipment, and materials commonly used in the masonry trade.
Nurse Aide is an introduction to nursing, focusing on basic nursing skills such as communication, CPR, first aid and patient care.
STEM and Precision Machining introduces students to the world of STEM through activities using machining technology. Students learn to lay out and produce projects using a variety of industry standard tools and equipment.
Pharmacy Technician introduces students to the skills needed to assist pharmacists in the delivery of health care services to clients in a variety of settings.
Sports Medicine students will spend four weeks learning skills to swim for life. They will be tested on various swimming skills — beginning with blowing bubbles — with a goal of learning various swimming techniques. Advanced students will have the opportunity to learn the skills of lifeguarding and become certified upon completion of the course. They must meet all the testing and skill requirements in order to receive their certification.
Web Development & Programming is designed to engage students in understanding the foundation of creating dynamic, visually appealing websites. Students will explore the fundamentals of front-end web development, create their own web page by considering layout, responsive pages, dynamic content and more. Students will examine HTML, CSS and JavaScript programming languages and how they all work together to create beautiful, purpose-driven web pages.
Welding introduces students to basic welding techniques. Create items using the skills you learn and explore options for careers in welding.

For students enrolled in a summer school course:
- English 10 Writing SOL: Aug. 1 (multiple choice) and Aug. 2 (prompt)
- Nonwriting SOL tests: Aug. 1, with expedited retakes Aug. 3
- Virtual Virginia and Henrico Virtual Academy students will take required SOL tests Monday, Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. at their zoned summer academy site.
For students not enrolled in a summer school course:
High school students who have passed a class but have not passed the associated end-of-course SOL test(s) needed for graduation will have the opportunity to take one or more tests at J.R. Tucker or Varina high schools. Students who wish to test will either register for and participate in a project graduation refresher session or register to test only. Registrations for all testing are online and will be accepted until June 17. See the summer academy website’s Project Graduation page for details and links for the signups.

These include students from outside the commonwealth of Virginia, from a private school or from homeschooling, who have passed an end-of-course class but have not taken the corresponding SOL test needed for graduation. These students must also submit the appropriate testing registration online by June 17.
