J.R. Tucker High School I.B. Program

Applications are closed for the 2024-25 school year. Check back in September 2024 for more information about applying for the 2025-26 school year

In 1995, Henrico County Public Schools was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to initiate a Middle Years Program in grades 6-10 and a Diploma Program in grades 11-12. Years 1-3 (grades 6-8) of the Middle Years Program were established at George Moody Middle School. Middle Years Program years 4-5 (grades 9-10) and Diploma Program years 1-2 (grades 11-12) were to continue at Henrico High School.

In 2008-09, we initiated an expansion into two additional middle schools — Fairfield and Tuckahoe — and one additional high school, J.R. Tucker. All new sites were designated IB Middle Years Program World Schools in 2011. J.R. Tucker completed the application process to offer the Diploma Program beginning in September 2011. All five sites are members of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference of IB World Schools and continue to participate in regional, national and international exchange, sharing and training.

Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate Programme aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the International Baccalaureate Organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The International Baccalaureate Program has been in place at J.R. Tucker High School since 2011. This rigorous, holistic program prepares students to become active citizens capable of engaging with a global society. Students take courses emphasizing interdisciplinary problem-solving, communication and critical thinking. Alongside academic coursework, students plan, take part in and reflect on extracurricular experiences that are invaluable for both personal development and the gaining of real-world experience.

Program Maintenance

In order to achieve and maintain the status of IB World School, HCPS IB sites must maintain standards and practices as well as philosophy, organization and curriculum as outlined by the International Baccalaureate Organization. These standards include teacher training on multiple and continuing levels, review of curriculum and teacher review of and reflection on results. Our teachers have served as trainers, subject scorers and program evaluators on the local, national and international levels. The programs are required to have formal assessment, honesty, special needs and language policies to ensure that all students are treated fairly and ethically. These documents can be found on this page. The schools must also foster an international atmosphere of tolerance and global awareness. All schools must successfully complete a self-study and undergo evaluation every five years.

All About IB 2023-24 is a handbook to help IB families understand more about the program, its policies and procedures. There is useful course information and planning as well.  Included are the HCPS IB policies (Assessment, Academic Honesty, Language and Inclusive Education) to learn more about what we offer.
