Henrico, Va. July 11, 2019 – Want to make a big difference for a student in grades 3-5 during the 2019-20 school year? All it takes is 30-45 minutes per week from October to May. Come to a two-hour training session in August or September and get started with Henrico Schools’ award-winning mentoring program, Henrico HEROES. Training sessions are:

  • Aug. 15 from 2-4 p.m.: 3820 Nine Mile Road, Henrico, Va. (Eastern Henrico Government Center multipurpose room).
  • Aug. 22 from 9-11 a.m.: 1440 N. Laburnum Ave., Henrico, Va. (Eastern Henrico Recreation Center Randolph room).
  • Aug. 29 from 2-4 p.m.: 3820 Nine Mile Road, Henrico, Va. (Eastern Henrico Government Center multipurpose room).
  • Sept. 12 from 9-11 a.m.: 3820 Nine Mile Road, Henrico, Va. (Eastern Henrico Government Center multipurpose room).
  • Sept. 21 from 9-11 a.m.: 1440 N. Laburnum Ave., Henrico, Va. (Eastern Henrico Recreation Center Randolph room).

To attend a training session, contact Leslie Velez at 804-652-3813 or email henricoheroes@henrico.k12.va.us.

The process of becoming a Henrico HEROES mentor is easy. Mentors complete an application, undergo a background check, and attend a two-hour training session. Mentors meet with their student once a week for 30-45 minutes from October to May and participate in a programwide kickoff and end-of-year celebration.

Studies show that mentoring pays big dividends for students. It improves students’ attendance and academic motivation, and students with a mentor are more likely to enroll in college, to volunteer and to be involved in sports and other extracurricular activities.
