Three spring events will give Henrico County students with disabilities – and their nondisabled peers – a chance to compete alongside each other. The competitions include one each for HCPS elementary, middle and high school students and feature track and field events and other outdoor activities. High school students will serve as volunteers for the competitions.

The annual Henrico competitions, coordinated by Special Olympics Virginia, are:
  • Big Feet Meet (high schools): April 16, 9:30 a.m. to noon (rain date April 17), Varina High School, 7053 Messer Road, Henrico, Va. 23231
  • Little Feet Meet (preschools and elementary schools): April 25, 9:30 a.m. to noon (rain date April 26), Douglas S. Freeman High School, 8701 Three Chopt Road, Henrico, Va. 23229
  • Meet in the Middle (middle schools): May 1, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (rain date May 3), Collegiate School, 103 North Mooreland Road, Richmond, Va. 23229
Admission to the events is free. The public is invited to come cheer on and celebrate the participants.

Around 1,800 athletes and their partners from HCPS schools are expected to take part in the three events.

The events are part of the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools initiative, which seeks to create a day of fun, collaboration and inclusion among students who may not spend time together in classes. The initiative seeks to give students with and without disabilities the opportunity to train together, to create friendships and to foster mutual respect.
