Henrico, Va. Jan. 30, 2019 – When basketball teams from Mills Godwin and Hermitage high schools tip off tonight, there will be plenty of talented performers on the court. There will also be lots on the sidelines. A livestream of the game will feature Hermitage students in all aspects of the production, from color commentary and sideline reporting to camera work, slow-motion replays and graphics.

The livestream of the girls’ and boys’ games will be handled largely by Hermitage students who are on the staff of the student-run HERM-TV and are enrolled in the high school’s Video and Media Technology class. The livestream will start at 5:50 p.m. with the girls’ game and continue through the boys’ game, which is slated to start at around 7:30 p.m.

On Feb. 8, Varina High School students will get a similar opportunity for real-world video production experience. Students enrolled in Varina’s Center for Communications and Media Relations will handle many of the same video and reporting roles for a livestream of the Highland Springs/Varina boys’ game. That livestream will start about 7:30 p.m.

TV services staff members in Henrico Schools’ Department of Communications and Public Relations will direct the production, handle the main camera and play-by-play duties, and offer advice, but the students will do the bulk of the work. Students will rotate positions throughout the games, giving more students a chance to participate.

The live student productions can be viewed by going to henricoschools.us just before game time and clicking the livestream link. The Mills Godwin/Hermitage games can be seen again this weekend on the HCPS-TV channel in Henrico County – channel 99 on Comcast and channel 38 on Verizon FiOS. The games will also be available for viewing later at the school division’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/henricoschoolstv.
