Free meals at HCPS schools

  • 2021-22 school year: Through the end of the 2021-22 school year, breakfast and lunch are available at schools to all students at no cost every school day, regardless of family income.
  • Summer 2022: During summer 2022 programs, only select sites will offer free meals. Other sites will offer meals to students participating in onsite academic and enrichment programs, but the price a student will pay is determined by a student’s meal application status on file with HCPS. See summer meals information and a list of locations.
  • 2022-23 school year: The process for free and reduced-price meals will return to the school division’s pre-pandemic procedure. Starting July 1, families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. Families with students attending schools designated as “Community Eligibility Provision” schools should not complete an application, as all students receive free meals at these locations. Go to our School Nutrition Services page to find the application and see a current list of Community Eligibility Provision schools.

P-EBT pandemic benefits

The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer — or P-EBT — program is a federal program originally created to supplement school meals during the pandemic. The federal P-EBT program issues benefits to eligible students, as determined by U.S. Department of Agriculture standards, for absences related to COVID-19 that occur during the 2021-22 school year. Benefit amounts will vary and are based on the number of days in which the eligible student was absent from school and met program requirements each month.

When will P-EBT benefits be issued to eligible families?

  • May 25, 2022: For eligible absences during September and October 2021.
  • June 14, 2022: For eligible absences during November 2021 through January 2022.
  • June 25, 2022: For eligible absences during February through May 2022.
  • July 25, 2022: For eligible absences during June 2022.

Questions about P-EBT pandemic benefits?

Because of the volume of calls, questions about your family’s P-EBT benefits should be directed to the Virginia Department of Social Services, not your child’s school. Direct questions to the P-EBT Call Center at 866-513-1414 or 804-294-1633 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
