Calling all J.R. Tucker alumni: Connect with other Tigers and celebrate the school’s next chapter

Henrico, Va. March 26, 2019 – Fifty-three classes have graduated from J.R. Tucker High School since the school opened in 1962. The school’s many alumni and friends are invited to gather at the Parham Road campus April 20 to connect with other Tigers, reminisce about the existing school and celebrate the next chapter. Construction on a new school is slated to begin in the fall on the site of the school’s football stadium and practice field. When the new school is completed in 2021, the existing school will be demolished. J.R. Tucker students will continue to attend the school while the new facility is built.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors are invited to walk the J.R. Tucker campus, including the gym and football stadium. There will be J.R. Tucker clothing and other items for sale, as well as yearbooks, and visitors can buy hot dogs, popcorn and drinks. School booster groups will also hold fundraising events.
In September 2018, Henrico officials announced the replacement of both J.R. Tucker and Highland Springs high schools. Both new schools will open for the 2021-22 school year. Unlike the plan for J.R. Tucker, the replacement of Highland Springs High School does not involve demolishing the existing school building.
Renderings of each project were presented at a Feb. 28 School Board meeting and can be seen in BoardDocs, a web-based tool for publishing School Board meeting agendas, audio and related material. Find the renderings by going to and clicking on “School Board and BoardDocs” at the top. At the BoardDocs site, click “Meetings” to find materials from the Feb. 28 monthly meeting.
