National Indigenous People’s Day

October 11

While Monday is observed as Columbus Day, it is also National Indigenous People’s Day in Virginia, declared by Gov. Northam “as a day to honor the rich culture and recognize the contributions of Indigenous people and Native Americans across the commonwealth.” (Read Gov. Northam’s declaration.) In Henrico County, one daily reminder of the centrality of Indigenous people to our area is the image of Pocahontas, a member of the Powhatan people, who graces the county’s seal and represents our school division.
