News and notes from Henrico County Public Schools; Volume 2 Issue 20

Job fair tomorrow: Be an HCPS bus driver!
What drives you? At Henrico Schools’ Pupil Transportation Department, it’s the school transportation needs and safety of our students. On June 5, drop by a job fair at the Henrico Training Center, say “yellow” and talk school buses with HCPS departmental and human resources representatives. We’re seeking candidates for full-time and part-time positions.

  • June 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Henrico Training Center, 7701 E. Parham Road, Henrico, Va.

It’s graduation time
Henrico Schools graduations are on the horizon. Graduations will be livestreamed at henricoschools.us, and ceremonies will be replayed in Henrico County on channel 99 (Comcast) and channel 38 (FiOS). An important note to families wishing to drop off or pick up guests at VCU’s Siegel Center: stopping is not allowed along the westbound portion of Broad Street in front of the arena. All drop-offs or pick-ups will now be limited to the eastbound portion of Broad Street, across the street from the Siegel Center.

June 11 is a student holiday, staff clerical day
June 11 will be a student holiday and staff clerical day in order to accommodate primary elections. The School Board added the holiday in March in response to community and staff concerns about safety. Virginia’s primary elections will take place that day, and many HCPS schools serve as polling places. Find out more about the change.

SAVE THE DATE! Back-to-School Kickoff will be Aug. 17

Wait – you’re thinking more this week about the beach than about back-to-school? We understand. But make a quick calendar reminder to be at Dorey Park Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the second annual Back-to-School Kickoff! Register for school and complete online forms at the event, and learn how to use PowerSchool and Schoology! Talk to vendors, see school performances, eat at food trucks and visit booths from HCPS schools and departments. Don’t miss it!

HCPS facilities closed on Fridays starting June 21

HCPS schools and Central Office are closed on Fridays from June 21 through Aug. 16. Schools may also close for lunch or other reasons during the summer, so please call individual schools before stopping by.

Beat the “summer slide”

Summer slide isn’t a piece of playground equipment – it’s the tendency for students to lose some of the progress they’ve made during the academic year. But there are ways to keep your students’ skills sharp and have fun all summer long. Shannon Hyman of HCPS’ Library Services Department offers ways families can fight summer slide:

  • Read aloud together with your student every day, at every age.
  • Play reading bingo! Find bingo cards at our summer reading page.
  • Road-tripping this summer? Borrow audiobooks and listen as a family.
  • Check out the summer reading program at Henrico County Public Libraries.
  • Remember, if you want your student to read, give them ample opportunities to see YOU reading, too!

For details, resources and lots more ways to foster reading this summer, go to HCPS' summer reading page.
