Thank you for supporting public education

Thanks to the voters of Henrico County, the education bond referendum on Tuesday's ballot passed with 86% approval. The bond funding provides $340.5 million for school projects, and will rebuild or renovate five HCPS schools built between 1958 and 1971. With passage of the referendum, our community will be able to:

  • Rebuild Quioccasin Middle School
  • Rebuild and increase the capacity of Jackson Davis Elementary School
  • Rebuild and increase the capacity of R.C. Longan Elementary School
  • Rebuild Highland Springs Elementary School
  • Renovate Charles M. Johnson Elementary School
  • Construct an environmental education building at Wilton Farm, on the James River, for use by HCPS students.
  • Build a new Fairfield area elementary school to accommodate residential growth.
  • Build a new West End elementary school to accommodate residential growth.

All four bond questions — for schools, parks, public safety and flood prevention — passed with overwhelming approval Tuesday.

Did you know

Two schools are celebrating landmark birthdays: A big cake and 100 candles for Longdale Elementary School, which is celebrating the school's century mark this month, with a 100th anniversary celebration Nov. 18. The original wooden structure was built in 1922 on Greenwood Road next to Greenwood Methodist Church. In 1933, the school was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt, using brick, at its current location on Norfolk Street.

L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will host an event this month to celebrate the school's comparatively youthful 25th year. The school opened in 1997 and was named in honor of Wilder, Virginia's governor from 1990-94. Wilder is the first African American ever elected governor of a U.S. state.
