Driver benefits include health care coverage, retirement plans, sick leave
Henrico, Va. Sept. 1, 2021 — Henrico County Public Schools is raising its minimum hourly pay for bus drivers to $17.15. The pay hike is a 15% increase from the current rate of $14.91 and will be reflected in the first paycheck associated with the new year, which employees will receive Sept. 15. It applies to bus drivers and some other transportation staff members already employed by HCPS, as well as to new hires. Drivers who already make $17.15 will get a 2.37% pay increase.
The move is part of an aggressive recruitment effort by the school division to add bus drivers, which includes:
- An increase to $17.15 an hour for new and current drivers, and a 2.37% increase for HCPS employees already making $17.15.
- Incentive bonuses of $1,000 to $3,000 for new drivers, and up to $2,000 for current drivers.
- A comprehensive benefits package, which includes health care coverage, sick leave and participation in the Virginia Retirement System.
New hires: Incentive bonuses
Depending on licensure, new bus drivers will receive:
- A $3,000 bonus for drivers with a commercial driver’s license (CDL), plus “S” and “P” endorsements.
- A $2,000 bonus for drivers with a CDL (but no “S” and “P” endorsements).
- A $1,000 bonus for brand new drivers.
(Bonuses will be paid in installments throughout the year and are for new hires only. For additional details, contact the HCPS Human Resources Department at 804-652-3664.)
Current drivers: Incentive bonuses and pay increases for longevity
The school division previously announced new safe driving and attendance incentives for drivers and those incentives will now be doubled. Incentives will increase from up to $1,000 to a possible $2,000 for staff members who qualify. Both current and new drivers are eligible for safe driving and attendance incentive bonuses. On top of other increases, some current drivers will also see salary increases of up to 9.83%, depending on their years of service.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to the county administration for its support of these efforts,” said Amy Cashwell, HCPS superintendent. “This additional pay is even more extraordinary when considering that more than a third of our current bus drivers are also due to receive longevity increases in their Dec. 15 paychecks, indicative of their loyalty to Henrico County and our schools.”
Applicants can apply online and get information about our benefits package at https://henricoschools.us/careers/. Applicants do not need to have bus driving experience. Qualified driver candidates will be paid as they train.
Candidates for full-time and substitute bus drivers must: be at least 21 years old; have a valid Virginia driver’s license; be able to obtain a CDL Class B instructional permit or hold a CDL Class B license with endorsements in P (Transporting Passengers)/S (School Bus) and airbrakes; pass a physical and a drug test. Depending on the situation, candidates with felony convictions may be eligible for employment.
