Henrico, Va. Aug. 27, 2021 — The Henrico School Board approved school calendars for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years at its Thursday work session, ensuring that Henrico County Public Schools will join other Virginia school divisions that have adopted pre-Labor Day start dates. The Board considered two calendar options for each school year. Both years featured options for a pre-Labor Day start and the traditional post-Labor Day start. In both cases, the Board voted unanimously to choose the option with the pre-Labor Day start date. The decisions came after months of input from the public and the HCPS Calendar Committee.
The calendars do not add school days, but instead shift the school year to earlier start and stop dates. The change would be gradual: the 2022-23 school year would start one week before Labor Day, and the 2023-24 school year would begin two weeks before Labor Day. The process of choosing calendars beyond 2023-24 has not yet begun. The decision does not affect the current school year, which begins Sept. 8.

Background: HCPS announced June 9 that it was restarting a conversation about whether the school year should begin before Labor Day in 2022-23, with an initial proposal to build in more time for cultural and religious observances by beginning school a week earlier while finishing at the school division’s traditional time in mid-June. After getting feedback, the HCPS Calendar Committee responded with updated calendar ideas for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, to give Henrico employees and families advance notice of any changes.
Of Virginia’s 135 school divisions, 105 have adopted pre-Labor Day start dates.
