YAY KAREN NOWICKI! Karen Nowicki of Springfield Park Elementary School, is one of today’s “Yay of the Day” honorees. Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored her recently at Springfield Park.
YAYWORTHY— Nominator Adam and Tammy Bell said: “She uses debates as a way to make learning fun and encourage higher level thinking. She is receptive to parents and created a classroom environment that is comfortable for student and parent discourse, even in a virtual format. My child was given a debate topic that he did not prefer. She was supportive and encouraging to him (and us).”
Lisa Anderson said: “She has gone above and beyond to keep her fifth-grade students engaged with ‘real-world’ learning in their virtual classroom. Most recently students had a visit from famous author, ‘Avi’ after reading his books together as a class. Students had the opportunity to ask questions about how he creates his ideas for books, and ask questions they may have had about other books he had written. She also organized a virtual debate for her students in the fall where they learned the importance of supporting their beliefs with factual information, while also respecting the beliefs of others. Currently students are so excited to participate in the “Stock Market Game’ as they work collaboratively to build stock portfolios to compete with others across Virginia. So many amazing connections are being made daily and her students can’t wait to log on each day to see what adventure she will be taking them on for the day!
She makes a difference daily with her funny stories and through the meaningful connections she makes with her students. She always encourages them to ‘be their best self,’ and to never give up no matter what hardship they may be facing, because tomorrow is always a new day to try.”
Thank you for all you do to make a positive difference and move HCPS forward!
