Students will resume learning Tuesday using remote digital and nondigital methods
Henrico, Va. March 12, 2020 — In response to the spread of coronavirus, Henrico County Public Schools will close its school facilities to students Monday with plans to reopen March 30. The move prioritizes the safety of students, staff members and the community during the COVID-19 public health crisis and was made in consultation with other school divisions in the Richmond area. There will be no school for students Monday, and HCPS teachers and staff will use the day to continue preparations for student instruction using “virtual learning” experiences. On Tuesday, students will resume instruction remotely using digital and nondigital methods.
“This is not a decision that we made lightly,” said Amy Cashwell, Henrico Schools’ superintendent. “We realize that any change to educational schedules is disruptive and inconvenient for families. However, our priority must always be the health and safety of our students, staff members and community.”
“This is a rapidly evolving public health crisis and it’s important not to wait too long to act,” said Roscoe Cooper III, School Board chair and Fairfield District representative. “Nothing is more important than safety. Together, we can work to minimize the spread of this illness.”
Before reopening, school division officials will evaluate the situation using the latest information to ensure the safety of students and staff members.
Details about virtual instruction and other aspects of the closure will be relayed to HCPS families and staff members in separate communications.
The HCPS Facilities and Pupil Transportation departments have been conducting additional cleaning of buildings and buses. They will continue those efforts and will continue to assess cleaning practices.
Many HCPS students depend on school meals as a crucial part of daily nutrition. Henrico Schools is working on plans to address those needs.
