Versions reflect staff, community requests for more days off for religious observances

Henrico, Va. Nov. 19, 2019 – Weigh in on your choice for Henrico County Public Schools’ calendar for 2020-21 by voting online for your preferred version. After getting input from the community at three community meetings, the school division has arrived at two possibilities for the calendar. The calendar versions both seek to accomplish a variety of ends, such as a post-Labor-Day start; planning, clerical and professional learning time for teachers; and observance of religious holidays. Public feedback will be considered as the calendar committee recommends a version and the School Board adopts a final calendar.

One notable difference of interest to families: the two versions counterbalance the number of student holidays with the length of Winter Break. Version A has a shorter Winter Break, but includes six student holidays throughout the year. Version B includes two weeks of Winter Break and four student holidays.

See details about the two versions and express your preference through Dec. 1 at henricoschools.us/calendars/.

While Virginia school divisions now have the option to begin the school year before Labor Day, Henrico Schools isn’t considering that option for 2020-21. Opening before Labor Day will be considered for future school year calendars. A final calendar for 2020-21 is expected to be adopted by the School Board at its Dec. 12 meeting.
