BEFORE YOU BEGIN – PLEASE READ!

Parents/Guardians:

  • Students must use their HCPS Credentials in order to log in and submit an application.
  • All parent/guardians must submit the Parent Authorization and Waiver Form before the student will have access to the applicant program. This form is located online via the Power School Parent Portal.
    • Login to Parent Portal
    • Once you are logged in, locate the Specialty Center Icon on the left
    • Click on the star symbol and you will have access to the online form
    • Read and Authorize
    • Select a waiver option for teacher recommendations.
  • This submission is required in order for your 8th grade student to access the applicant program.
  • Once you have completed the form online, it does take 24 hours for the form to be recognized.

Note: If you need to complete a paper form, please contact your child’s school counselor for assistance.

Students:

  • You must use your HCPS credentials to access the applicant program.
  • If you select both IB locations, you are stating that you are open to attending either location. Example: if you wish to only be considered for IB at Tucker High School, then only select the Tucker High School location.
  • You are required to enter at least one activity in which you participated in during middle school in order to move to the next step of the application process. Example: Nursing Home Visits where you spend three to four hours a week reading to residents.
  • You must select 2 teachers from your current school to provide a recommendation on your behalf. One of the teachers you select should be from a core subject area (math, English, science, or history).
  • Centers may have a project requirement such as auditions or essays. Please pay close attention to the Individual Center Projects page that appears after you finalize your application. Please note all required projects. The list of projects can be found on the home page of the applicant program or on the HCPS Website at: http://henricoschools.us/specialty-centers/.
  • Do not finalize your application until you are sure you have selected all the centers to which you wish to apply, submitted all the activities you wish to include, and selected two teachers to submit recommendations on your behalf. Note: If you need to make changes after you have finalized your application, please see your school counselor.

Student – Create the Application

  1. Once your parent/guardian submits the Parent Authorization and Waiver Form and it has been 24 hours, please access the site at: https://hcpsapps.henrico.k12.va.us/ to begin your application.
  2. Please select the link “Specialty Center Online Application” and use your HCPS credentials to login.
  3. Stop: Please read the first page.
  4. Once you are ready to begin, select the “Create Application” button (top right).
  5. Take a moment to verify that your personal information is correct. If you see any errors, please report them to your school counseling office before you proceed with the application. This may require you to log out and return another day.
  6. Select Specialty Centers: From this page, select all centers that you would like to include within your application for consideration. Once this is complete click the “Process Selections” button (top right).
  7. Enter Activities: Enter an activity name, hours per week, grades participated and the description for each activity you wish to include. Each time you “Save an Activity”, the activity will show up at the bottom of that page. Once you have completed all activity entries, click on the “Finish Activities” button (top right). Note: You must include at least one activity but no more than five.
  8. Teacher Recommendations: Select two teachers for your recommendations. Save your selection each time. One of the teachers you select should be from a core subject area (math, English, science, or history). One you are done with two selections, click once on the “Complete Recommendations” button.
  9. If you applied to the Center for Arts (dance, music, theatre and/or visual arts) under the specialty center tab, you will need to select an audition session. Click once on the blue edit button next to the center to select an audition session. Once you have selected the audition session, click once on the “Apply Changes” button.
  10. Before you select the “Finalize Application” button, review your activities, specialty center selections and teacher recommendation selections. Note: At this point you can still make changes by clicking on the tabs.
  11. Once you select Finalize Application and select continue, you will be directed to the project page. If the center you are applying to requires a project, you will see the information on this page. Print this page and complete all projects. Another option is to use snipping tool to snip and save.
  12. Application Summary tab: Click on this tab and print a summary of your submission.
  13. You may return to the application during the submission window to review applicant summary and completed projects.
  14. Once the window for submissions has closed, you will no longer be able to see this info.
  15. Project Dropbox – Students will need to drop their projects into the Schoology course “School Name Specialty Center Writing Samples: Section 1”. Example: Brookland MS Specialty Center Writing Samples: Section 1).
  16. Student Response Window: Once chairs have made their selections and updated student statuses, a window will open and students will login to the applicant program and submit responses to each center application status. Window is schedule to open on 3/9 at 4:30 PM.
