Reviewers have called author Sy Montgomery’s 2015 book about octopuses “fascinating,” “touching” and “astoundingly beautiful.” Montgomery’s “The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness” was selected as this year’s All Henrico Reads selection. The author will speak to HCPS students and the public April 5 at Glen Allen High School as part of the annual event.
At a morning event at the school, Montgomery will speak to students from across Henrico County. Her evening appearance is open to the general public and is free. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Books will be available for sale after the evening talk and the author will be available to autograph them.
Scientists have only recently accepted the intelligence of dogs, birds and chimpanzees but now are watching octopuses solve problems – and are also trying to decipher the meaning of the animal’s color-changing techniques. Library Journal, in selecting her book as an Editor’s Spring Pick, cited Montgomery’s “joyful passion for these intelligent and fascinating creatures.” In the book – a National Book Award finalist – Montgomery chronicles the growing appreciation of this mollusk as she tells a unique love story. By turns funny, entertaining, touching and profound, “The Soul of an Octopus” reveals what octopuses can teach us about the meeting of two very different minds.
In researching articles, films and her 21 books for adults and children, nationally bestselling author Sy Montgomery has been chased by an angry silverback gorilla in Rwanda, hunted by a tiger in India and swum with piranhas, electric eels and pink dolphins in the Amazon. She lives in New Hampshire.
All Henrico Reads is an annual literary program designed to foster community discussion of a chosen book, while highlighting the importance of reading for all ages. It is sponsored by Henrico County Public Schools, Henrico County Public Library and the Friends of Henrico County Public Library. The student event will be streamed live from the HCPS website, henricoschools.us.
