Henrico, Va., April 4, 2018 – The Los Angeles Review of Books called this year’s All Henrico Reads selection “a deeply personal coming-of-age story that extols the power of self-reliance and the love of books.” Author Reyna Grande will discuss “The Distance Between Us” April 11 in two appearances at Glen Allen High School.

At a morning event at the school, Grande will speak to students from across Henrico County. Her evening appearance is open to the general public and is free. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Books will be available for sale after the evening talk and the author will be available to autograph them.

“The Distance Between Us” is an inspirational coming-of-age story that Publisher’s Weekly said “captures and inspires” readers. It was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

The memoir recounts Grande’s childhood growing up in extreme poverty in Mexico. After her parents leave to pursue opportunities in the U.S., Grande and her siblings are left with an uncaring family member. At age 9, she enters the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant, joining her father. She soon learns that her new life in America – as well as her father – are not quite what she imagined. She is faced with new difficulties, including navigating the U.S. educational system, and her father’s alcoholism and violence. Grande finds refuge in reading and writing, inspired by Latina authors. She breaks free from her violent family life and pursues a college degree, and eventually a master’s degree in creative writing, becoming the first person in her family to go to college.

In addition to writing, Grande is also a frequent motivational speaker at high schools and colleges.

All Henrico Reads is an annual literary program designed to foster community discussion of a chosen book, while highlighting the importance of reading for all ages. It is sponsored by Henrico County Public Schools, Henrico County Public Library and the Friends of Henrico County Public Library.

The student event will be streamed live from the HCPS website, henricoschools.us.
