Visiting educators will tour Henrico schools to see “Leader in Me” program in action

Educators attending a symposium at VCU will tour two Henrico County schools to see how they are using a transformative leadership model to enhance student achievement. Groups of visitors will tour Crestview and Holladay elementary schools to get a firsthand look at a schoolwide program called “The Leader in Me.” Five HCPS schools have adopted the model.

Holladay last year became the first public school in Virginia to attain “Lighthouse School” status, an advanced designation awarded by the program’s parent organization.

Crestview Elementary Leadership Day

Students participate in Crestview Elementary School’s Leadership Day in April 2015. Crestview is one of five Henrico County schools that have adopted a schoolwide model called “The Leader in Me.”

The visiting educators – from school divisions in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware and the District of Columbia – will board buses at VCU’s student commons. Participants will tour one of the schools as part of a symposium called “Rethinking Leadership.”

The Leader in Me model was developed by Franklin Covey Co. in conjunction with educators, and incorporates ideas from sources on leadership, education and effective social and emotional interaction. Students help set goals, track data and assume leadership roles. The model seeks to help students improve in such areas as self-reliance, initiative, homework skills, time management, expressing viewpoints in persuasive ways, understanding different values, finding creative solutions and balanced living.

Studies from various sources about the impact of the program can be found at the organization’s website at http://www.theleaderinme.org/what-is-the-impact/.

When: Dec. 14, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (tours run concurrently at both participating schools)
Where: Crestview Elementary School, 1901 Charles St., Henrico, Va. 23226
Holladay Elementary School, 7300 Galaxie Road, Henrico, Va. 23228
